Modern High School concentrates on the overall development of the individual. And this is possible only if co- curricular activities are added to regular academics of the students. The school offers each student a wide variety of co-curricular activities that include Sports, Public Speaking, Quizzing, Creative Writing, Art Appreciation (Visual and Performing), Environmental Projects and Environmental Awareness Programmes, Community Service Projects, Information Technology Music and Dance and many more. There are special activity periods for students of Class III to Class VIII. These activities are graded according to age and grouped under 3 categories.
Communication Skills : Here they learn the art of expressing opinions on varied subjects, diction, voice modulation etc..
Environment Awareness: Here students learn to appreciate nature. Simple experiments are performed by the girls such as sowing seeds and watching them grow. They also learn about caring for the environment, save it from pollution and girls are let to come up with practical solutions for controlling pollution.
Appreciation of Arts: This includes visual art as well as performing arts. Here they learn to appreciate different art forms, both visual and performing arts,identify the different classical dance forms; different types of painting, etc.
Physical fitness Programme : The children are taught the art of self-defence through Karate, concentration and physical fitness through Yoga and the keep-slim-and-trim exercises through aeorobics.
Music : Students learn to sing in chorus as well as individually. They are introduced to the theory of music of different cultures.

By the time girls reach Class IX, they are ready to join the various clubs, which are :-

CYBERBUZZ -The computer club "cyberbuzz" is a platform for the computer savy students of our school.
MATHEMAGIC -The Mathematics club called "Mathemagic" was started in April 2003 for the junior classes.
  HERITAGE -This club aims at promoting an awareness of our heritage.
  IMAGES -This is the Film & Book Club.

DEEPSHIKHA and MAYUKH are the Hindi and Bengali Clubs respectively. Besides these, MHS also has Guides and Bulbuls. Bulbuls are for the juniors (III-V) after which they are sent up to guides. Guiding aims at character development. It is a non-political, educational, voluntary organization for the youth. Our Guide Company is one of the biggest and most active companies in South Calcutta District. Every Year the senior Guides strive to attain the Rashtrapati Award which brings an honour to the School.

GUIDES & BULBULS

  • The year 2003-2004 started with the Bulbuls "flying up" to the Guides.
  • At the Annual Creative Art Contest "Symphony"(Bulbuls) and "Expression" (Guides), the Bulbuls won the Ashoka Gupta Memorial Shield for coming overall 1st in the competition
  • At the Annual Competition of the South Kolkata Guide wing our Guides won the overall trophy for the second consecutive year.
  • The Guides of the school company went for their Annual Camp to Gorumara Reserve Forest at Chalsa where they spent three days performing Guide activities.
  • For the Bulbuls an overnight camp was organized by the District at Ganganagar, in which our senior Bulbuls participated.
  • Guides and Bulbuls celebrated Republic Day, Thinking Day, and Independence Day in their usual ceremonial style.
  • During the year 11 Guides qualified for the Rajya Purashkar and 6 Guides qualified for the Rashtrapati Purashkar

MHS also offers the International Award for Young people -India (East Zone), i.e. East Zone Award Authority (EZAA). This is a non-competitive, self-development programme.

House System
There are 8 Houses. These are namely :-

3. Hibiscus
4. Jasmine
5. Lotus
6. Magnolia
7. Orchid
8. Rose

The girls of Classes VII-X elect Captains and Vice Captains of the various Houses. Girls can gain or lose marks for their House depending on their work and behaviour. Based on their performance, at the end of an academic year, the House with the maximum marks gets the "Weekly House-Mark Competition" Trophy. To build up team spirit, a number of Inter House Activities are held through out the year. These activities take place in the form of debates, table tennis, Badminton and Throw Ball matches, culminating in the major event of the year- the Annual Sports.


Prefects & Sub-prefects

Girls with leadership qualities sense of responsibility and good academic record are chosen from Classes IX and X respectively for the Secondary section and Classes XI and XII for the Higher Secondary Department. Prefects are selected by the students, short-listed and endorsed by the staff members.

For the election of Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl, a few names are short listed from among the prefects. The final selection is based on the candidates' speech and interrogatory session.
